Sunbeam Challenge 2011 - 26th June AMOC Donington

Post by B9471845 » Tue Mar 01, 2011 3:39 pm

Get your diaries marked for this year's Sunbeam Challenge race, at the AMOC Donington meeting, Sunday 26th, apparently televised by Motors TV.

Also an Intermarque round for an extra helping of Tiger race action !

Looks like a good entry this year, with strong support from the Alpines. Glad I'm only in these races, those doing the Intermarque as well have 4x 10 minute races to fit in. Great for the spectators and TV but a nightmare for those responsible for managing the grid!

Two days of Sunbeam action at Donington this weekend.
At least 14 Sunbeams in action in the Sunbeam Challenge races:

Saturday
Simon James' FIA Tiger in the AMOC Pre-66 race around 13h40, Keith Hampson's Le Mans Alpine and another in the AMOC Pre-60 series at 14h35 and Tristan and Jackie in the Intermarque at 15h25.

Sunday (televised on Motors TV)
Jackie and Chris Beighton are in the Heritage races at 13h10 and 15h35.
(There's also a Sunbeam Talbot Lotus).
First J.O. Engineering Sunbeam Challenge is due at 17h10.
Zoe, Paul and Tristan are out in the Intermarque around 18h00.
Second Sunbeam Challenge is at 18h50.

Timing may get revised on Sunday.

Due to Lisa making me go to Greece, I missed this.

Any pics or vids of the goings on?

Full results for the weekend here:
http://www.tsl-timing.com/amoc/2011/112554.pdf

1st Sunbeam race featured a dramatic battle between Jackie Cochrane's multiple-winner and David Smallridge's car, David won but at the expense of a gearbox. This left race 2 to Jackie, except Zoe North had other ideas and outdragged him at the start and held the lead for some time, just losing out at the closest finish of the weekend - 0.025s, hopefully pictures posted soon. I was delighted to collect GYU 618C's 50th chequered flag in the 1st race and the FIA class win in race 2, despite losing a place to Spencer McKenzie's Alpine after several defensive laps.

Jackie won all 3 Intermarque races and at least 1 Heritage, one race from the back too! TSL results sheet not clear for race 1.
Chris Beighton took the LM Tiger to victory in one of the pre-66 races while Simon James and Rupert West claimed an 8th in their FIA car.

All in all a very successful high profile event for Tigers which offsets the very long wait in the heat for the Sunbeam Challenge races.

Some in-car footage:

I couldn't shake off Spencer's Alpine, I would be faster down Craner Curves and up the hill but everywhere else he caught up. I cocked-up / locked up at the chicane, allowing him through, and there he was, gone:

One more, a busy moment for Glenn Brackenridge completing his first ever race in the Harrington Alpine:

Great clips, its good of you to hang about at back for photographic purposes. Do you really need the sat nav on the screen to show you the route?

Actually Bob, I take so long to do a lap I put an MP3 player on the dash to pass the time. I'm learning Finnish at the moment, so I can say "jotka söivät kaikki piirakat"...

Andrew,

What type of cooling system do you run? I know you car is an FIA spec car (appendix j?) and is quite stock, and while i know you are racing the temp gauge looked to be pinned in the footage. Do you have to use a stock radiator?
