No champagne yet I am afraid. Running nicely at idle and part throttle. It's the bit in between that is the problem. Coil maybe a missmatch, though it did work on the 260 with electronic dist.

Martin, you can see most of the padded seat in the rear. It just follows the shape of the sheet metal and is held down by domes as you see in the front.

Hiya Mal

Choice! Great to hear (literally) the engine running. Nice work with a few of the engine details as well. The alt bracket is very tasteful - are you pivoting from a single point off water pump? Own bracket?

And the dipstick? Is that a lock in unit? Make sure you get she of the technology to shoot a few extra vids.

Looking Great!

Hi Tom.

It was nice to finally start it. Fired straight up even though I had the firing order as the non roller blocks. Runs smoother now I have found out the HO engines have a different firing order.

The alt bracket is home made and has 3 bolts holding it all on. I will take a pic for you.Dip stick is not a lock in unit. Bloody hard to read how much oil is in the engine with it too.

Thanks Mal - did you also get the pump pulley turned up as well? Shot gives a great view on just how tight that bottom radiator hose routing is as well. What a compromise!

Tom,

The pulley is a march pulley, but we did have to add to the fan face and turn out the inside to get pully alignment.

What firing order are you using for your engine. Is it a hyd roller engine.

I have been using 13726548 and though it idels well it misses under acceleration. I just pulled wires 1467 and it still runs the same. It must be running on only 4 cyl. I originaly had it on 15426378 but that was worse.

Are there any more firing orders ?.

Firing Order

Post by Tom_HRO260 » Sat Mar 16, 2013 6:55 am

Hi Mal

I'm running a hydraulic roller. Most later cam profiles (as best as I have found) run 351W FO as a rule. If you know what cam grind you have then that will dictate.
1 - 3 - 7 - 2 - 6 - 5 - 4 - 8 is 351W/302HO
Excuse the obvious point, but check rotation. SBFs are anti clockwise. LH Image might help as a guide...

Cheers Tom

One more thing

Post by Tom_HRO260 » Sat Mar 16, 2013 7:00 am

Sorry Mal - the other thing to check is that you don't have the dizzy in 180 deg out. I made that mistake on a SBC once and yep, turns it into a 4 cylinder quick smart. If FO is correct and rotation is correct, then I'd go back to step 1 and pull the dizzy, find TDC on #1 compression (the old thumb over an open plug port does the trick), slot the dizzy back in and redo ign lead sequence and timing.

That could well be it. I did time it that way, then decided to make #1 about 180 deg from the first setting to make the leads tidyer. I didn't think it would make any difference as long as I made the terminal that the rotor was pointing at #1.

I will give it a go in the morning.

Well I pulled the dizzy, stuck my finger in #1 spark plug hole (front left as facing the engine) got her in doors to bump the starter until the compression blew by finger out. Decided where I wanted #1 cyl terminal should be. Set the dizzy with the rotor pointing there. Attached #1 lead to that terminal and the rest 13726548 in an anticlockwise direction.
Started it and it ran perfectly on 4 cyl :x .

I have been doing a search and found three others with who have had the same problem, there V8 running on 4. One guy replaced his coil and that cured the problem. I am not using a MSD coil so I have one ordered.
Fingers crossed.

Hi Mal
Are you sure it's not a fuel problem, what carb are you running, as one venturi feeds 4 cyl and the other the other 4 with some carb and manifold set ups.
A coil that feeds all 8 cylinders , does not normally fail on the same 4 cylinders .
It's a shame you are a little to far away to pop over and have a look, but maybe that is something to look at.

Keep up the good work Harry

Harry

The carb is a holley 1850 600vac sec on a edelbrock rpm manifold. The carb had a new kit put through it and definatly has fuel squirted into both venturies by the accelerator pump.

I will pull it off and see if I can see any problems and if one ventury only feeds the running cyl.

Hi Mal,
when you rebuilt your Holley carb, did you reset the idle screws by 1.5 turns out either side,as a base starting postion.
Your poor running problem i.e only on 4 cyls, maybe that one idle circuit is not operating correctly.
Could be blocked idle bleeds in carb venturi, try some carb cleaner with engine running, spray small brass bleeds and open throttle to help clear debris.
