There is often confusion about ignition coils for the Tiger.
(BY part numbers refer to Real Steel online catalogue Section 9, page 5).
Mallory electronic distributors (magnetic and unilite) use Mallory ignition coil BY29216.
This coil must use a Mallory ballast resistor (resistance 0.75-1.50 ohms) BY700 or similar.
There is another Mallory coil 29219 (RS do not appear to stock this) which does NOT need a ballast resistor.

RS also stock a universal coil for a points distributor BYD500-J which must use a ballast resistor BYRU 10 or similar.
***None of the above are to be used with capacitive discharge or MSD ignition systems.
Mallory Ignition Coils
I bought my Mallory distributor from Real Steel many moons ago & it came with a matching coil that did away with ballast resistor. Many years of service witrh no problems. But just about to fit MSD 6btm with MSD coil, I'll let you know if its an improvement. {Does anyone else have problems with ignition over 6PSI boost?]

Actually bob.. yes and with an MSD.. though it was on a friends turbo Mr2 not a tiger. He had lots of trouble with the MSD, sent it back to them twice, still no good, ended up switching igntion systems. Also had a tiger friend with an MSD that would not play ball.. he switched to Crane.bigbob wrote:I bought my Mallory distributor from Real Steel many moons ago & it came with a matching coil that did away with ballast resistor. I know MSD is meant to be one of the best, but so many people seem to have had issues with their boxes, hopefully they are just unlucky.
