5 stud hub conversion?
5 stud hub conversion?
Hi all
Have any of you guys converted your hubs to 5 stud application? I know you can buy front alloy hubs from Wilwood and Aerospace components but the rears are a little more tricky? Full replacement axle or new shafts?
Any advice will be very welcome.

Ash,
If you keep the same PCD you can let a decent machinist modify your existing rear hubs to 5 stud.
I think that the Jaguars with that 4HA axle had 5 studs, but the PCD is probably different.

The PCD will be different probably the same as Jaguar 4.75" ?
Cheers

5 Stud Hubs
In case of interest. This is the 5 stud hub and Girling disc brake set up fitted to the rear of a prototype. The vehicle is AF202: The MKII 3 Speed Automatic that came with 14" wheels on 5 stud hubs and disc brakes on all corners
Yep, pending restoration when pics taken!

Graham,
i know a few of the prototype cars played with 14" 5 studs and all disc setup, apparently 1 with the de-dion rear. Was this setup the same as the one on the MKII that autocar ran.. IIRC that was a 5 stud 4 wheel disc MKII, whihc they later fitted techdels off a BMW and speedomatic cruise contorl and electric windows sometime during their ownership.. is that car still around?

Rootes Experimental Dept reports say the De Dion IRS evaluation was done using AF4 (MKI) but a production rear end was fitted before it was sold off. [be great to recreate that!]. The three known 2nd series prototype MKII's - AF202, AF203, AF204 - were fiited with disc brakes, along with 5 stud hubs and 14" steel wheels. (BTW almost certainly no MKII protos were built up from MKII's, all were 'extended life' MKI 'AF' vehicles).
I hadn't heard of the goodies you mention being fitted to the Maurice Smith (Autocar Editor) MKII [His Tiger was a pre-production car based on MKIA B382001528 HRO] and today is in near standard spec. The production RHD MKII supplied to Gregor Grant (Autosport Editor) was almost certainly the standard item at first and remains pretty much so today.
I'm glad to say all these Tigers are in the Club.
Whilst I'm at it 1). I have seen 'Tiger Tom's' machine which has 'everything'!
Whilst I'm at it 2). What's the best cruise control product for a Tiger?
Whilst I'm at it 3) One pre-production MKII is missing (last seen in London about 10 years ago). Can 'down south' Forum browsers keep a look out for a red GDU 343D !!

might have been the autosport tiger, its in the gold portfolio book. They do a long term report on the MKII, there is a photo o fit out the front of a cottage with its hardtop on and 14" 5 studs, they show an engne bay shot wioth the cruise-o-matic speed control and they hav an interior shot where you can see the 2 power window switches on the trans tunnel.
As i mentioned they fitted the wheels, cruise and windows, but the 5 studs and discs were factory IIRC... will have to hunt the book down tonight and see what i can find.

OK, The car i was reffering to was Maurice Smiths of Autocar MKII Tiger. Its the long term assesment article from June 1969. He mentions how MKII's were not sold in the UK but that a few " Tiger 1 1/2's" made it ourt and to police.. so this is not a MKIA, so i assume its a rootes development MKII (hard to read the plate but says *DC 496* not sure what letters are where i put * to hard to see in the picture, car also appears to have a S3 alpine/rapier fastback nonnet badge.. maybe this car was also used for facelift evaluations?
Car had 10.7inch giriling discs on the front and 9.6 girling discs on the rear and was fitted with 5 stud 14" wheels.
Autocar fitted:
Tech del 14" minilites
Smiths electric windows
Smiths battery condition indicator
Smiths electric clock with hearing aid battery
Tramp bars/rear stabliser
Koni shocks
rectangular driving lights
Speedostat cruise control

I've contacted the owner to try to find out what's left of Maurice Smiths 'handiwork'.
