Storing Carburetors.

Post by gtsmrt » Sun Sep 26, 2010 11:24 am

Hi,

I am currently in the middle of installing an EFI system to my Tiger and was wanting to store the removed carburetor. Is there something I can do to make sure the seals, etc don't dry out or perish?

Thank you, Robin.

Nit sure about storing a carb, but would love to know more about the EFI you're fitting. Is it a proper kit or an e-bay bitzer?

Me too. Sounds interesting. Is this a bid for better mpg?

As far as storing the carb is concerned, I would imagine that sticking it in a sealable plastic bag with an oily rag or some anti corrosive paper and putting it somewhere dry and cool should do the trick.

If you're feeling adventurous and have a mig welder, you could always fill the bag with CO2 or argon or any inert gas you have to hand first. That could be a bit overkill though.

Hi Guys,

The efi that I am installing is a FAST (Fuel Air Spark Technology) product that was put on the market last year. It is basically a throttle body injection setup, but the beauty of this product is that it's self-learning. Once the installation is complete, you enter a few basic bits of information through a hand-held controller and basically go for a drive. As you drive it adjust your setup without the need for a tuning specialist. It does require fuel system mods, but the throttle body fits on a standard four barrel manifold. The benefits should be better cold/hot starting, throttle response and fuel economy. Cost wise is at least a quarter of the cost of going to a full sequential system. I'm currently in the process of sorting out the fuel system, with the throttle body and 90% of the wiring harness fitted. Looks very nice.

Check out the link: http://www.fuelairspark.com/ezefi/default.asp

Looks interesting. I wonder if it would work with a supercharger? It might solve the problems that I have trying to calibrate a blow-thro carb.

It doesn't look good Bob.

This is copied from their FAQ section.

5. Can I use a turbo or supercharger with the EZ-EFI®?

No. The MAP sensor and tables in the firmware are only rated and scaled to 1 bar for normally aspirated applications.

Robin, interesting how the one size does up to 600hp. Keep us posted on how the car feels with throttle response as well as wide open throttle, and economy, compared to the carby.
Cheers Mal

I also remember reading that engines with low vacuum cannot use the ez-efi either (8" of mercury if I remember correctly).

Hi Mal,

I will keep everyone updated on my progress. It seems a very flexible system and still gives you the ability to fine tune your setup if you wish. It can also control A/C and cooling fan and also has a rev limiter. Hopefully this weekend I will be able to push ahead with the installation.

I have some pictures here (more to come soon): http://rides.webshots.com/album/5689988 ... s&start=24

Hi,

For those that are interested, I have basically finished my installation of the efi throttle body to my Tiger. After a couple of little issues caused by myself, I have the system up and running. First impressions are very smooth idle and the short runs that I have done show excellent throttle response (no hesitation/stumble through the rev range) without the fuel smell of the carby. I hope to give it a better run this weekend to let the ECU fine tune the fuel map. I will report back on the outcome of the run.

Hi,

After the first run last Sunday I was very pleased with the results. The target air/fuel targets were spot on by the efi display across the board, very smooth acceleration and perfect idle. Both hot and cold starting was excellent. I will have a bit of a play with acceleration fuel setting (accelerator pump for efi system) to see if I can improve throttle response a bit more. Looking for to more driving time soon.

Regards, Robin.

Any updates Robin :?: How does it compare to the carb you were running, now you have been running the EFI for a while :?: . Worth while conversion in your opinion :?:

Cheers Mal

Thanks for the interest Mal. I am looking at going for a run this Sunday as I haven't been out for a few months as I thought I had a radiator leak (turned out to be a loose hose clamp). Prior to that I am pleased to report trouble free motoring. As I have previously mentioned, The idle is smoother, hot starting is no effort any more, acceleration without any hesitation (a well tuned carby should give you that as well) and I don't come home smelling of petrol. I did install an ICE ignition system which made a huge difference. Are you thinking of installing an efi system on the white Tiger when you buy it Mal? :)

Hi,

Had a great run today on some nice flowing roads out in the hills (foggy in places, but nice and cool... engine didn't get over 170 degrees). A 200 Km round trip was what the Tiger needed. The EFI ran very well and gave me a chance to tinker with the acceleration fuel enrichment (basically like an acceleration pump on a carby) to see which is best for drivability. Looking forward to the next run. :)
