Tiger Slippy and Cool.

Post by martin172 » Sat Aug 28, 2010 11:06 am

I wondered if anyone had tried this stuff...

...and if it had made any improvements in the cars cooling.

Also, I wondered which engine, transmission and diff oil people used.

Many Thanks, Martin. :D

Oh, and one other thing. What tyres do people put on their Tigers?

Martin, be carefull of cooling addatives like water wetter etc.. they might lower temps a bit however can cause accelerated corrosion in heads and water passages. A good cooling system moving enough air in a Tiger wont need that sort of thing.

As for tyres depends what you want.. if you are runing 13" wheel the choice for a sports tyre is limited.. but you can get decent semi-slicks.. but they are often lower profile than what we should use. !4" is much becoming the same story.. as we dont do high miles often soft tyres are likely to go old and hard before we wear them out... so go for something fun.

On my alpine I run Falken Azenis 175/60 R14.. great tyre but noisy and pick up stones.. on the Tiger i am running a tyre from dunlop the dzeria.. very happy.. semi slick compound with a sports tread.. using 195/60/R14.. i really like them.

Hi Michael, it has 14" wheels on it so I'll have to see what is available.

It's a good idea about getting some sticky tyres due to low mileage.
There's nothing worse that binning practically perfect rubber due to it's age.

Hi Martin
Toyo proxes, in my opinion are about the best value sports tyre you can get. As for oil, do not use synthetic oils in the engine, Lucas 20/50plus racing oil is very good. Gear box and axle most 90/80 g/oils are ok. I tried water weter and all i got was a header tank full of sludge, not recomended.
happy Tigering Harry

Hi Harry, thanks for the info.
I've heard good thiings about Proxes in the past so I'll have a look.

Thanks for the oil suggestions too.
I presume the issue with synth is it's habit to seeks out leaks and clear the gunk that's filling those little holes.

Note in diary. Water cooling additives suck.

i found the only way to make a tiger run cooler was to put a brand new engine in  expensive but 306 bhp ,cool as fcuk and with 16inch panasports and toyo proxies goes round corners like its on rails :D

It's an interesting point you make Gary.
All you have to do now is change the body and you'll have a Scooby. :D

Hi Martin,

I am using Penrite 10w50 motor oil and a 90w in the gearbox and diff (basically as per the workshop manual). In regards to tyres, I recently installed a set of 14" Yokohama C-drive tyres and they are fantastic. For general road use and a even the odd track day you will be more than happy with their performance and they were a very reasonable price for the 14" 185/60 version.

Hope this helps.

Regards, Robin.

Hi Martin,

Even with an non-synthetic oil at a 10W, it will seek out leaks. If you find some leaks, it's better to just repair it (gaskets are cheap, repairing motors isn't).

martin you can throw thousands at these cars and solve nothing ,in my experience there are no cheap fixes for tigers ,dont be scared of modifying a tiger, tigers never worked properly for very long back in the day ,there no different now ,using a new motor ,gives you modern technology ,another thing is have your car set up on a rolling rd ,without one even the SPECIALISTS are guessing.rolling rd is the best £300 ive ever spent, anyway once you have chucked 40k at it it should be something like, alpines with v6s in go well

How very true Gary and as Tiger owners, we would all agree. We are not trying to scare Martin though. Once you have your nice car though, there are some relatively cheap upgrades that can make our Tiger's more joyful to drive. Things like four barrel carbies, electronic ignition, aftermarket engine fans, etc really make a difference in my opinion. If you have the time and money, you can then go for the suspension fixes, etc.

Thanks for the info guys. :D

Gary, I was kidding with the Scooby comment.

I don't see anything wrong with modding them. It was Sunbeam themselves that set the precedent in the first place really.
I doubt it will be something I'll do. Not in the foreseeable future anyway.
