Engine Balancing

Post by v8 junkie » Tue Jul 20, 2010 8:08 pm

Balancing and Vibration, Had my Tiger looked at by Steve Smith of Vibration free(specialists in vibration analysis and dynamic balancing) What a difference!! 75 grams on front of engine(Damper and Pulley) and 85 grams on back(flywheel and clutch cover) all done in situ, the 347 Stroker runs like a sewing machine now Just thought that I would sing his praises

IIRC steve used to race a VERY fast alpine. It was my understanding he developed a special balancing machiene that the block is placed upside down and the components run at lowish rpm and dynmaically balanced.. this allows him to calculate the difference at higher rpm and give more accurate balancing.

I also was told he was gogint o race a mustang.. can imagine thats pulling some scary RPM

Hi V8 junkie,

Were you there when he did the process? I would be interested to hear how he does it with the engine still in the car.

Thanks, Robin.

I had to leave the Tiger with Steve, it took him over 2 days to sort it out first of all thought it was going to an engine out and strip down, but after a lot of thought managed to do it externally much to my relief!! He has some quite sophisticated balancing and vibration analysis equipment and I have all graph readouts of before and after, On my bill the heading is Tiger inquest!! The 347 Stroker is a bit of a handfull but I have a Tremec 5 speed box to keep the revs acceptable

I think Steve may be a world leader in this type of balancing. I called a local engine rebuilder/balancer and he had never heard of any in car balancing done in Australia ever!! Steve may be a very busy man if word get out. Was it an expensive exercise?

I was watching one of the car programs on C31 the other day and they were saying that Moffat's red Mustang used to rev to 9000rpm . I think that was a 302ci. Now that must be balanced well!!

For the amount of time Steve spent on it I don,t suppose it was to expensive, but I didn,t expect it to be cheap, because of his expertise and the proof is in the pudding, the car is so smooth now, and to contradict an earlier statement I made the 347 Stroker is not a handfull(pulling from 800rpm in 5th gear) unless you want it to be!!!
