Best Oil for a Tiger

Post by garyf » Thu Sep 06, 2018 1:40 pm

Can anyone recommend the Best Oil for a Tiger?

I've been advised mine is currently fitted with VR1 Oil by the PO.

It's getting ready for an Oil change soon.

I run mine on a standard 15W40 oil suitable for both petrol and diesel. Look for a spec like SJ/CF4. That is an oil for older engines (pre 2004) containing zinc, which is good for flat tappet tops and bad for diesel particulate filters!

See the link below. They are not the only supplier!

Just change the oil and filter every year and it will last a lifetime!

By all means use an advanced synthetic oil if you wish. It will do no harm, but is ridiculously over-specced for a tiger engine, unless you are racing it.

Thanks Adam

I've always used Penrite or Millers Classic Mineral type oils with good levels of ZDP on my previous Triumphs designed to run on 20W50 Grade Oils.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for some 15W40 Classic oil at the next Auto-jumble I visit.

Cheers

I have used a 20/50 oil in the past in the tiger and it is fine. But a 15W40 is perhaps a bit better for filling the hydraulic tappets rapidly after start-up. If you talk to American classic car owners on the forums, they seem to use some very low viscosity oils such as 5W40, but I am not convinced that there is any advantage in that.

I can recommend these people for mail order supplies at very good prices. https://www.withamgroup.co.uk/shop/classic-range/

I used their fleet oils for years, excellent products.
