Steering Column Noise

Post by garyf » Thu Jul 05, 2018 4:26 pm

Can anyone help with an annoying steering column rattle/knock I get when accelerating, its worst whilst turning and accelerating.

The noise sounds like something catching the Column, I've checked all the mounting bolts and pinch bolts on the lower UJ's and all are tight.

The steering wheel is also tight with no play

Could it be a worn upper bearing or something loose inside the column, the telescopic mechanism perhaps?

Hard to diagnose just by description. Worn upper bearing could be the cause and it's very common...

Has your car got a generator, sometimes it can catch and give the symptoms you have.

It does have a Dynamo (Generator) with very tight clearance so will check its not catching the column?

The top bearing is a possible too

I have the same issue. Slight interference somewhere under WOT, upper RPM.

I grin and think of it as “character”
