noisy engine knocking noise

Post by malcolmhookings » Tue Mar 27, 2018 4:49 pm

Can anyone give me any info on the following please.
I have a slight knocking from the engine, it sounds like it is coming from the top of the engine, inlet manifold area, if you put you're ear to the air filter it sounds like a machine gun, a lot faster than the knocking standing away. The engine is a 302 and was built in 1987, although it has only covered 700 miles, shame on me, I have had the person who built the engine, who has now sadly passed away, look at it and he couldn't tell and suggested stripping it down, but also said, just drive it, also I have had another experienced mechanic look at it, no clues at to what it might be but he also said, just drive it.
Just to note when the engine was built it had a very hairy lumpy cam, I wasn't happy with the tick over so I changed it more a more across the board cam, I also changed the lifters, but I cant remember if I changed from solid to hydraulic or visa versa.
Any input would be appreciated.

hi Malcolm,i would buy an engine stethoscope, you can get one off ebay about £5.with it you might be able to narrow down the area where the noise is coming from.
