hydraulic lifters
hydraulic lifters
One of my hydraulic lifters seems to clatter for a while on start up. I should have replaced them when I had the engine out a few years ago. Can the lifters be replaced in situ? I suspect that the rear pushrods may not be able to be totally removed due to clearance problems but can't see any other difficulties

Is it best to fill the lifters with oil before installing them. The Rootes workshop manual seems to recommend fitting them dry whereas some engine specialists suggest immersing them in engine oil overnight.
Fit dry. I turned nut 3/4 nut after push rod pinched lifter. I have an old drive shaft from a old dizzy which I used to pump up the lifter when they're set. Make sure lifters are lubed with break in lifter lube. Start engine and run for 20 minutes at over 2000rpm. Make sure dizzy goes back in as it came out to ensure the engine fires up as quickly as possibly.
TBH there's bound to be loads of people that fill up lifters before and don't have a problem.
