New front brake caliper option for Tiger

Post by pushrod » Thu Jun 04, 2015 6:39 am

Last week I did some testing at Llandow Circuit using BCC Thruxton 4 pot front brake calipers. Good fun but not kind on my tyres!

We did back to back runs with the original calipers and the BCC Thruxton (Tiger), calipers I've been helping to develop. These new calipers will fit under 13" wheels and you should still be able to retain the original dust shields. Significant improvement in braking performance and a reduction in weight.

The comparative breaking distances weren't that spectacular but that was because I had had Mintex 1144 fast road/trackday pads fitted, the BCC calipers had the optional EBC Greenstuff pads.

Existing Caliper, Girling 16 @ 40 mph 19.4 metres
BCC Thruxton @ 40 mph 17.74 metres.

Existing Caliper, Girling 16 @ 54.6 mph 26 metres
BCC Thruxton @ 55mph 24.8 metres.

Although I haven't driven the car a great deal since the caliper change, the new ones definitely feel much better. I'll be able to report back further after I've driven the car up to Harrogate and back for this years STOC National. Anyone who wants to look at the new calipers can do so at Harrogate.

The calipers will also fit an Alpine.

That's a great piece of development work Lou. Looking forward to seeing it up close next weekend at the STOC National Rally.

Hoping to see a lot of our 'viewers' in Harrogate as well.

Hi Lou,
Do these calipers take the standard pattern brake pads and can the standard discs be retained?
Thanks,
Tim

No you can't use standard Tiger pads in the BCC Thruxton caliper but if you purchase a set they come complete with pads. There is no need to change the brake disc/rotor.

Following a 725 mile round trip to Harrogate for the Nationals I can now report back that the BCC calipers do make a substantial improvement over the standard setup.

On normal road driving they give much more confidence in braking, but it was on our drive over the Yorkshire Moors that I saw the biggest improvement. Obviously this is just my opinion.

Also the clatter many of us get with standard pads/calipers has now gone, for me the squeal from the Mintex MD1144's has gone as well and the Green Stuff pads aren't quite as dirty as the Mintex, but still deposit a fair bit of grime after a long journey.

So worth the investment ? I thought the 'clatter' was just me. Been driving me mad.

Yes, I run with 14" wheels.

Definitely a worth while upgrade, easy to fit. Just unbolt the originals, fit the new one's and bleed the brakes.

Apparently the original dust shield do need a bit of modification.

Does the brake pedal have the same travel on the new calipers?

I can't say I've noticed any significant difference.
