Converting the steering column

Post by alpine5gt » Mon Jun 16, 2014 7:09 am

I know someone has used the Opel EPAS steering column to provide power boosted steering to the Tiiger. I would like to go down this path so if anyone can help with information or guidance, I would be very grateful
I am down under in Aussie land so need the help long distance.

Well its been almost 12 months and no replies. Now I know some people have had their Tigers converted to EPAS steering. I now have a alpine downer column, a doner EPAS unit and the Tiger column to provide a yardstick of the final length. Now before I approach an engineering firm with the work to fit the unit, I would like to be able to tell them the length of the front alpine assembly to be grafted onto the EPAS front shaft and the rear of the alpine shaft cut and modified length.

Any details would be very gratefully received

Can anyone advise if you have the electric power steering setup, do you retain the adjustable steering wheel option?

Yes, adjustable steering is retained.

I'll try and measure my steering column for you.

I have now decided the cost of fitting the EPAS system is far too high. It was estimated to cost over $3,000 for the finished unit even when I supplied the epas and the alpine column.

I am now changing to a Mazda MX5 power steering rack and a electric/hydralic pump.

I talked to reps of this company at the Goodwood Revival in 2014 and they seemed very knowledgeable. They had done Tiger and their demo in another car there was impressive -first with the ignition (power) off and then
with the ignition on. Expensive however. I understand Tom Hall in the US is looking at it, having seen a demo when we were over for the Archive trip.

I've asked for a quote so will let you know how much it is.
One thing is it''s dealer fit only, which as they don't have many dealers involves a fair amount of travel costs i.e petrol.

I understand that they still use the Corsa power steering unit and that they cut your Tiger column.

Why don't you contact Jim Oven in Monmouth (JO Engineering). His units are much cheaper and use a shortened Alpine column, you get to keep the Tiger unit in case one day you want to change it back. Have you ever seen a Tiger column for sale? There are a few dozen Tigers that have had this conversion.

Jim is doing one for me at present. I'll let you know how it goes. I also have MG rack fitted at present. Be interesting to feel the difference. Think that its adjustable so can be tailored to suit personal preference for degree of assistance.

Had a long chat with Jim yesterday about the PS & a heap of other things as well. Hope to get a unit from him at Le Mans classic next year.
