No spark?

Post by Tbirch » Mon Jun 02, 2014 9:14 pm

New crate 302 engine fitted, started ok, idle ok. Misfired when revving (could be fuel) float is level, mixture screws have been adjusted so it could atleast start ok. And getting fuel out of jets.
●check spark to spark plug with spare plug on plug lead. No spark!
●checked power to coil, 11.8v to positive and 1v at negative (not sure if that is acceptable)
●Removed negative and replaced with earth run straight off of battery.
●removed main ht lead to dizzy cap and fitted spark plug to end of ht lead....cranked. not spark.
It has petronix electronic ignition fitted about 8 years ago.
I have tryed a spare coil brought a few years back but no change?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
regards, Tom.

That being the petronix box inside the distrubutor? Again I have 11.8 volt feed to that but 5volts coming from the negative.... which cant be right!.

The ign module will be the black box in the dizzy. You could give Petronix a call and ask them. I know when an ign module dies that is it,it's dead, no spark.

No Spark

Hi Tom,
I assume that you are using a standard Ford distributor with the Pertronix unit inside.
If that is the case, can you not refit a set of contacts and condenser unit, gap them and see if you get a spark from the coil lead to distributor.

This may help you in your diagnosis,in tracking down the ignition fault

Hi guys,
had another look at the car this evening. Rather embarrassingly the pickup underneath the rotor arm had come adrift and wasnt located properly
After refiting that I now have spark back!
Thanks Dave and Mal for the replies.
