Clutch Master Cylinder Spring.

I've had the clutch master cylinder to bits today so I could change the seals.

All seems fine apart from a strange circumferential score/groove in the bore just in front of the hole that feeds the oil to the slave cyinder but according to my calculations, the rubber seal doesn't go down that far so it should be ok.
I can't figure out how it got there though. :?


Anyway, what I have also found is that the outer spring looks too short but I can't be sure as I can't find any reference to them.

I don't know if they are both supposed to be the same or not.

It does look like it has snapped but I would like to be sure.

The brake master cylinder one measures 3 inches.
The clutch master cylinder one measures about 2.5 inches.

Does anyone have one kicking about they could measure for me or if you are feeling really kind, measure the one on your car for me please?

I am pretty sure both springs were the same length in my car. I would say the short spring has been cut for some reason.

Hi Martin,
Mal is correct ,that the pedal return springs are the same length.
Your Clutch cyl return spring looks like it has suffered from fatigue and the last coil has broken off.
Not been cut in any way,the end should be flat to allow the spring to sit on the bulkhead,the other end has the retainer.
Try and get another clutch pedal spring to give you the return action for the pedal

Does anyone now where I can get just a spring from?

I really don't fancy buying a whole cylinder for just the spring.

Martin,
you don't have to buy a new cylinder just to get the spring,they are not of Girling manufacture,best to source a good used item.
Some suppliers may have one spare to sell

Yes ofcourse, it's a Sunbeam spring isn't it. Silly me.

Would an Alpine one be the same?
I'd prefer an Alpine one because a Tiger one would be 10 times as much. :)

Martin,
it does not matter if they sell you an Alpine or Tiger spring,both will be second hand,so the difference in vehicle should not attract a premium.

In cases where I cant buy a replacement on its own I often wind my own springs from spring wire or 'piano' wire. This one could be tricky though as the diameter is not constant.

Ok, so I don't waste another thread :) I'll put this in here.

I've moved onto my brake master cylinder now the clutch cylinder is done.

It has corrosion pitting in the bore so it is dead and I'll need a new one.

I found this on the end of the push rod. Looks like someone has had a file and a hacksaw to it.
(I presume these are a Sunbeam item).

The rod for the clutch was rounded so I doubt it should be gouged up like this?

Also, as I need a new master cylinder can someone point out what I need?
I know it is a .875 but there seems to lots of different types.

Sorry if I sound like an incompetent idiot but I'm new to this brake master cylinder malarky.

Can't help with the damage to the end of the pushrod.
You should be able to get the MC bored and sleeved with a stainless sleeve. It will never do it again. I don't know if you can get new ones.

Hi Martin, speak to Dave (Red Baron) about a place in Suffolk that replaces the centre with Stainless Steel. Other than that try Sunbeam spares
