I seem to have a slight petrol leak from the inlet pipe where it joins the ford 2- barrel carb. Does this union have a sealing washer or does it rely on the flared end to seal it like a brake pipe?

the Ford carb inlet pipe does indeed seal with the flare into the carb.
Remove the pipe and check to see if there is no distortion to the flare or debris under the seat to impair the seal
