Mallory dual point, Pertronix and rev counter problem

Post by meadowhog » Sun Apr 06, 2014 4:00 pm

FYI, if you have a dual point dizzy and it's not perfectly set up your electronic rev counter will not work correctly. If the rev counter is good it will likely only read up to about 3K. To test it, put a piece of card in one set of points and check the difference.

I've just had a recon rev counter fitted by JDO but it didn't work properly until I tried the above. It's a little tip given to me by someone else who the same problem.

I'm now seriously thinking of fitting a Pertronix ignition but can't find anything that gives a good comparison between the three types and whether the MK III will effect the rev counter. It gives out 3 sparks per cylinder instead of the normal one. As the rev counter reads number of sparks would this give a high reading?
