What sort ofTyres

Post by tigerman7347 » Fri Oct 11, 2013 2:10 pm

Just been on to my insurance company (Hagerty) regarding what sort of tyres should be on the car ie T H or V rated? Well it does not matter, as long as the car is roadworthy, ie has enough tread on the tyre there is no need for special tyres. I have just fitted some T rated 13" tyres which are fine.

If you have modified your car I would recommend going to VR rating for piece of mind. The minimal extra cost is worth it.

bigbob is right.

Tyre speed ratings are:
Q - for up to 100 mph (usually winter tyres)
R - for up to 106 mph
S - for up to 113 mph
T - for up to 119 mph
U - for up to 124 mph
H - for up to 130 mph
V - for up to 149 mph
W - for up to 168 mph
Y - for up to 186 mph
ZR - for up to and above 149mph

Since most of us do low mileages in our Tigers, it is worth keeping an eye on the age of the tyres (see point 8 on the above link).

Date of manufacture. This is important as the age of a tyre can affect its performance. The first 2 numbers refer to the week and the 3rd and 4th numbers refer to the year.

The law on tyres:

3 points per illegal tyre plus a fine!!

Also check your everyday car.
