Speedo cable drive

Post by Mal » Thu May 16, 2013 8:49 am

I seem to be missing the part that goes between the cable and the gear.

Does anyone have a diagram or photo of the part I need so I can go looking for it in the shed or find one else where.

What is it that you think you are missing?

Does your speedo cable look like this...

Martin.

Yes thats the same as mine. My cable does not protrude as far out as yours.
I thought they had made the new cable 45mm to short as it does not engage the speado drive gear. I was told there should be a part that goes between the end of the cable and the gear.
Do you have that part or does your cable go all the way to the end of the drive gear.

The part you can see in the pic you showed me of your gear box will just pull out and you will see.

Could you measure the amount the cable protrudes from the fitting.

I'm not inclined to remove the part from the gearbox as it probably has a seal of some sort that I then will likely have to replace.

I measured the speedo cable and the amount sticking out is 66mm.
If yours is shorter than that then I would tempted to say that that is the problem.

Do you have the original speedo cable? Where did this one come from?

Perhaps someone else will be able to help you with a photo.

Martin

thanks for the reply. I sent the old cable away for them to copy. I suppose it has been thrown away now. They have the new one back with them at the moment, waiting to hear what I want them to do.

I think they just stuffed up. The length your cable protrudes is perfect to reach the end of gear.

Mal, do you have 15 or 16 teeth on that drive?

I've just taken mine out of what I believe to be the original 4-speed toploader (UK RHD 1965 Mk1) and I have 15 teeth. I've sent out a couple of enquiries, one to the US and one to Austrialia, and they both have said they can only provide 16 teeth, 15 teeth no longer available.

Anyone else had this problem?
Tiger Mk1 (289)
Jag 3.4 Mk2 (rusty!)
Cortina Mk1 Estate (302)

That's a 16 tooth. You can't get the 15 tooth anymore. My speedo runs
5 mph fast at 60 mph. It will depend on the overall tyre height you have, how far it will be out.
