Steering Rack
Steering Rack
Just started having a look at my steering rack.
When it's moved from side to side it has a lumpy action about it.
Is this normal and if not any suggestions as to why?
I've had a good look at it and all seems ok and I've had a look at the damper pad and that looks fine.
Any ideas?

Martin,
I have my rack at the gear cutters who did the work for me. The engineer there has bushed the pinion end as I suggested. He is going to make a new slipper pad out of bronze. This is his email to me.
Hi Malcolm
I have some bronze in stock, so I'll get one made up and that'll finish it for you.
The bush is fitted now and I managed to get a new spring so that'll be sorted sometime later today, and once the slipper is finished you should be on the road again.
I reckon that rack should have had a bush in there from the start, because it feels so much more positive, and the slipper then just has to take care of any play in the bushes which I think anyway looks like a safer arrangement.
I'm not sure if I'll get it finished in time to get it away to you today, but if not then early next week.
Regards
Bob
I don't know if using the standard Tiger rack you could have room for a bush at the pinion end with the steering on full lock. With the way we have done mine we do.
I will post some pic's when I get it back.

Finally got around to it.
This one (hopefully) shows how knotchy the movement of the rack is.
..shows the slipper thingy.
..and the side of the rack it sits on.
I had a good look at it today and I'm completely baffled.
I can't see anything wrong with it but it is knotchy.
I don't fancy buying a new rack if I can sort this one out and they aren't cheap either.
Any ideas?
Any idea of who could help?
Anyone know of any rack repairers?

If all the teeth look as good as the teeth in the pic and the slipper pad is in good condition, I would re-lube it, shim it correctly and fit it. I think it will always feel a bit knotchy just moving it by hand.
Do you have your gear box out at the moment. My speedo is not working and I think the drive gear that the cable engages is missing. Likt to see a pic of what I need to find or get.
Cheers Mal
