T5 Tremec 5-speed gearbox conversion
T5 Tremec 5-speed gearbox conversion
This has probably been discussed many times, so apologies for any repetition.
I have just bought a T5 with a view to fitting to my own Tiger some time this year. This is mainly to make use of the overdrive gear for longer journeys but having a lower first gear for quicker starts and less clutch strain could be a bonus.
I am prepared to engineer and make any special adapter parts rather than try to source from abroad although I understand there may be a UK solution?
I have the TVR version of T5 with the gearstick in the furthest foward position, so this should come out quite near the original hole (slightly forward and to the right I believe).
I have not decided whether to fit this to my 260 engine or go for a 6 bolt jobbie.
If I do go ahead I may make some kits up if there is enough interest?

My Gearbox is making some nasty noises so I have been looking at options
Gary I have seen that tremec do a shifter that is cranked to the left did you see that option, would it have brought the stick out of the original hole, how much and what have you had to cut to fit the box? would a 260 5 bolt bell housing fit the tremec? what prop yoke did you use, is the input shaft the right length and 10 spline does it fit the original clutch
Any info you can give would be very useful and I would be very grateful
Jay

Tremec now make a TKO 500 & 600 GEARBOX that will fit a Tiger with no cutting. Tremec 5spd's were designed to replace the T5 as they were not that strong. Fine for a stock engine, but if you want to build a engine with increased power you are better off useing a Tremec,

Ater reading about the tremec for tiger no cutting required I was getting interested but Gary you say this is not true what have you heard? What I really want is for the stick to come up in the original location and was hoping the side shifter for the tremec would do the job.
I would still be interested in all info regarding fitting the tremec. The price you got was really good, £1600 plus vat is the best I have found.

to do it without cutting i think you would need to buy the kit from the states think its about 3500 dollars plush shipping ect .last i heard of this kit they were still having problems with the selector .i would do some research .i wasnt bothered about cutting i would never sell the car .and i can put the old tunnel back as i have it .i dont think the side shifter would be far enough forward .
Sorry Mal, not clear what you mean by that. I think you are saying that the very early Borg Warner T5 compared to the Tremec T5? All later T5s were uprated.Mal wrote:Tremec 5spd's were designed to replace the T5 as they were not that strong.
Cheers Mal.
Regarding strength, the T5 which is now plentiful (in UK) (as a used T5) comes out of the TVRs up to 5 litres, and these are World Class units easily capable of handling the power of a road car. These can be picked up with a guarantee for under £500. Add a bell-housing and clutch plate etc and you are looking at under £1k for the lot.
Cutting a small amount from the tunnel, if necessary is surely not going to compromise strength or devalue the car, compared to the cost of mods to the T5 or use of a later more epensive gearbox.
It may even be possible to make a small offset plate to make the stick come out in the correct position, but that remains to be seen.
Sounds like you might have bought my old TVR T5. Fitted my Tiger with just minor cutting on top of transmission tunnel to bring lever straight up. In Euro spec is good for 350bhp. I changed to a Tremec as needed stronger box, but needed much more cutting out to hoop between seats & bigger tunnel. Stick with the T5. Real Steel do clutch plate to suit splines on T5. Highly recommended swop for relaxed everyday use.
