I have a variation on this question. Some 289 cranks have a one piece oil seal and some two piece. Are the cranks fully interchangeable?

Both crankshafts are the same as is confirmed in the parts list concerning Tiger Mark 1 and Tiger Mark 2. It is about the only thing in both engines that are the same. For more details check the book "Mustang & Ford Small Block V8" from the author Bob Mannel.

Regarding the two types of oil seals: it is possible to use both seals. Originally the seal was a rope seal and a sharp pin was centered in the seal groove in the rear main cap. This was done to prevent the roap seal from rotating. If you want to use a spit-lip-seal the pin has to come out and you have to fill the hole with silicone sealer to prevent a leak.
