Holley running rich

Post by meadowhog » Sun Jul 22, 2012 1:31 am

Ive got a 302 with 600cfm vac 2nds Holley which is running rich, very rich since fitting air filter. Carb seems to have been fitted 12 years ago and not really run. Not even sure if was set up right initially and this is not a carb im familiar with. Exhuast is sooting up and idle very lumpy but it picks well. Is there somewhere to find out what to check or does someone have some checks to make. Lots of white/black smoke but need to get through MOT.

Thanks Mal just what I was looking for. Wound the idle adjusters all the way in but the car still runs rich. Now looking for reasons why and where all that fuels coming from.

The chokes been locked off with a bar so the butterfly is fully open. Not sure if theres anything else apart from the butterfly that puts more fuel in though.

First port of call seems to be air bleed tubes and fast idle set up making sure slots are set up correct.

Excuse me if that doesnt make sence. I havent taken it apart to get my head round it yet. Just what Im reading on other forums.

Fuel pump seems OK, theres a regulator on it and its not used much. Its not been on the road for over 10 years which could be a clue. Float levels are good and timing seems good considering how the engine picks up so quick. I guess thats the easy stuff, now to get my hands dirty

nb: its a 0-1850S

Have you got a power valve? That enriches the mix on full throttle, may cause problems if faulty.[/b]

Yep, theres a power valve but I havent had a back fire, which I understand can damage it. It may have happened before by previous owner. Theres just a heck of a lot of smoke so theres got to be a lot of fuel going in. Accelerater pumps arent dribling so it must be coming from under the butterfly valves.

Is there a specialist nearby who you could take it to or do you want to fix it yourself?
I think Dave Herning's not too far away from you.

I take it you bought the nice looking green tiger with the arches?

Can anyone tell me what a power valve is?

Yep I bought the green one with the arches-I got a good price, I think? Im actually starting to like the arches.

The power valve opens when the vac drops way down when the pedal is in loud mode. If the throttle butterfly valves are open the inlet manifold cannot hold vacuum and a lot more air goes in. This air needs a lot more fuel to get the mixture right on 'high' acceleration. If the valve diaghram is split it leaks fuel straight into the carb with the butterfly shut and hence the idle valves dont really do much.

I have got the power valve out and can both suck and blow through it when both opening and closing the valve. Can I presume the power valve has had it? If so I need a 65 valve and a couple of gaskets, any good places to them from?

NB:First tried cleaning out the air bleed valves with carb cleaner but no difference.

It was up for £15k so I suppose you paid less than that and it looks very tidy so it looks like you did well.

I quite like the arches. They remind me a great deal of the front arches on a mk3 Cobra.

What else needs doing to it apart from the small repair in the trans tunnel?

Interior, but just about in now, ally rad and kenlowe to fit. I could do with a wood steering wheel-original (naff one to tart up, not paying £400!! Ive the horn ring) or Motolita cos the tichy one its got reminds me of when I was 16 and had stronger wrists. I want black and ally number plate, fold the rear arches and drop it down abit at the back. Chrome strip down the side with a bit missing for the arches. Believe it or not a drivers side seat bottom cos its got two passanger seats-I didnt spot that one. Trans tunnel been patched up almost ready for MOT.

Its not perfect but to make it how I would really like it Id be better off getting something that really needs work and doing every nut a bolt. Thats mega money-I wonder what Mals car's cost him?

Almost £15K but I got the spares too, just sold the NOS wing. Previous owner didnt want to sell but got desperate as he had to move to far east in 3 weeks. He even threw in a set of ski's and other bits all destined for the skip!

Going to try Reel Steel first.
