Small Oil Filter

If you are fed up with the original oil filter pipes and fittings leaking at various points, it is possible to remove this “Heath Robinson” contraption and use a smaller oil filter.

This filter is just so much simpler to remove/replace when you change the oil.

Do keep the OEM fittings somewhere safe. They are very valuable!

Part numbers are:

Fram PH2874
Crosland 659
Tecalemit FB5300

Application: Renault 5 Mk I (1979 to 1984)

How often should the smaller filters be changed?
The same intervals as the larger ones or more often?

This is one mod that I have always been a bit dubious about. Surely the original filter would have been chosen to allow a certain flow and filtering efficiency. I use one of the 90degree adaptors which utilises the original filter. The only problem is that you can't use them with some headers.

You are correct but a lot of Tiger owners have used this smaller filter successfully over many years, generally on standard engines. It is important to change it regularly (at least once a year).

I would not recommend using it on a modified engine. I use a remote full-size filter myself, but I was asked to post the small filter's part numbers and application for information.

Using the small Renault Oil Filter is by far the best modification you can do to your otherwise standard engine. Always oil tight and very easy to change. No need for any whatsoever oil pressure hoses and more access space in the lower left engine area. Did it on both of my Tigers and can fully recommend this swap :D

An option is using the Ford oil filter adapter M-6880-A50. With this adapter it is possible to use a bigger oil filter than the Renault filter.
I have installed this adapter on my Tiger while I had the Renault option before.
Fram as well as Mann are providing the suitable oil filters. Another possibility is the Motorcraft Fl-1A oil filter.

Using the Ford right angle adapter, are any modifications required to engine mounts etc for full-size filter clearance on an engine with cast iron OEM manifolds?

I don't think that this will fit when using most Tiger headers.

In spite of the experiences of other Tiger owners, I did not had to modify the engine mounts. If I remember correctly the case was that one engine mount needed to be rounded of a little bit. But in my case the adapter went on without any modification.
I don't know what the impact is of having headers or not. My Tiger has the standard set up.
The oil filter I use now is at least twice as big as the Renault oil filter.

For a full-size oil filter, compatible with headers or OEM exhaust manifolds, I have used this 90 degree block adapter:

If the full-size filter is going under the LH front wing, behind the headlight, then it is possible to use this remote oil filter bracket (horizontal exit ports):

If the filter is being mounted, via a flat steel/aluminium plate, on the LH cylinder head, then this remote oil filter bracket (vertical exit ports) is preferable:

(The TRD-1045 can also be mounted on the LH cylinder head using a right-angled fixing plate).

In the meantime I have compared the size of the small Renault oil filter with the size of the oil filter which I use together with the adapter M-6880-A50. Right now I am using a oil filter from Mann, type W940/81. In stock I have both the small Renault oil filter (Fram PH 2874) and the oil filter from Fram (type PH 2881) which can be used with the adapter M-6880-A50.
Measuring both the hight and the diameter (both outside the filter of course) gives the following results:
Fram PH 2874: volume = 0,15 litre;
Fram PH 2881: volume = 0,60 litre.
Which means that the bigger Fram oil filter is 4 times as big as the small Renault oil filter. In my former post I guessed that the difference was at least 2 times the volume, but that appears to be to modest. So anybody who doubts the conversion with the Renault oil filter because of the little size of it has now a very acceptable alternative I would say.
