Stalling Problem

Post by garyf » Mon Sep 20, 2021 1:56 pm

Hi All

Can anyone offer advice on a couple of annoying problems with my Tiger.

It is standard apart from being fitted with Electronic Ignition and a 2 Barrell Holley Carburettor.

I'm experiencing occasional stalling when I pull up to junctions, the tick-over slumps and the car stalls, it immediately restarts again and with a bit of revving will tick over. it seems worse when cold or when fully warmed up but only does it intermittently when hot.

I have also noticed a slight hesitation/stuttering when on very light throttle settings, as if the mixture is maybe too weak.

The car however accelerates smoothly with no hesitation or miss firing and when cruising on part throttle it's fine.

I have recently rebuilt the Carburettor after some flooding issues and have double checked the float height which is set as per the Holley instructions, I've not adjusted anything else, I'm thinking its a carb issue but anyone else offer any words of wisdom?

Lots of views but no responses yet :|

Can anyone recommend someone who can have a look and tune up the car for me then?

I was thinking of getting Chris Draycott to have a look.

An Update for anyone Interested, the Car is now back from Chris and it would appear (Fingers crossed) the stalling and hesitation problems are solved :D

Chris stated the Jets needed a good clean and also that the Ignition Timing was quite a way out too

I collected the car last weekend and she started first turn of the key with a bit of choke and then drove home with no stalling and a rock steady smooth tick-over of 600 RPM, got stuck in a a Traffic jam in the middle of Derby on the way home and apart from having to switch on the Auxiliary fan to keep the engine cool no problems were encounted

Chris did a few other jobs for me, including a cooling system flush with new Anti-freeze, new Spark Plugs, he carried out some adjustments to the doors due to them catching slightly at the front after my Hinge Pin replacement and also some minor adjustments to prevent the Steering UJ's catching both the Dynamo and the radiator bottom Hose alloy Elbow which I didn't know about! :?

The guy is an absolute mine of information on all things Alpine/Tiger and as some fascinating story's to tell after 40 odd years of working on Rootes groups cars, the charge for the work was very reasonable too I thought for a Specialist

He showed me around his Workshop where he was rebuilding a VW Golf Race engine for someone, together with a couple of Alpine Engines he had in for rebuild and tuning

I also spent a day yesterday doing some other general maintenance jobs, including a clean, re-grease and re-adjustment of the front wheel bearings, check and adjusted the rear brakes and also replaced a couple of split Exhaust Bobbin hangers, together with a general check over underneath.

I just need to change the Engine Oil & Filter and I will be all set for the Spring and summer :)

I really do need to use the car more this year after only doing around 300 Miles in 2021 due to the dreaded Covid!!

Let's hope we don't get anymore strange Covid Strains and that the weather picks up for the Spring and Summer for a bit of Top down motoring 8)
