Just to be a little pedantic, and to give visitors to the event a bit of background - it is the "St John Horsfall meeting" (pronounced Sinjon Horsfall)- we wouldn`t like to upset the Aston Martin Owners, I`m sure, by getting the name of one of their heroes wrong!
One of the Aston Martin Owners Club meetings during each year takes this name as it includes the " St John Horsfall Memorial Trophy Race " for Pre War Aston Martins.
He was a real life "Biggles" type chap ;- Wikipedia says;-
St. John Ratcliffe Stewart "Jock" Horsfall (31 July 1910 – 20 August 1949)[1] was a British motor racing driver.

During the late 1930s Jock Horsfall became a familiar and popular competitor at British and European motor races, commonly driving his Aston Martin 2 litre Speed Model, nicknamed the 'Black Car'. Driving the Black Car Horsfall won the 1938 Leinster Trophy race at Brooklands. In the same year the pairing took victory in the 2 litre class, and finished second overall, in the RAC Tourist Trophy race at Donington Park, beating the more fancied BMW works cars.

In addition to his competition career, during World War II he was employed as a specialist driver for the British secret service. During this time he was involved in Operation Mincemeat, a famously successful disinformation plot to convince the Germans that the Allies planned to land in Greece rather than Italy.[2] This operation was featured in the film "The Man Who Never Was".

Returning to the track following the cessation of hostilities Horsfall drove the Black Car to victory in the 1946 Belgian Sports Car Grand Prix.[3] In 1948 he and co-driver Leslie Johnson won the Spa 24 Hours race, sharing a prototype Aston Martin 2-Litre Sports car. He was killed in an accident while driving an ERA racing car in the 1949 BRDC International Trophy race at Silverstone Circuit. Today, the Aston Martin Owners Club maintains an annual race meeting in his memory.

Those who braved the weather forecast were treated to a great race in the early evening sunshine, after some of the worst track conditions I can remember during a soaking and fraught qualifying, cut short by 2 spinners (unharmed) in the gravel at the bottom of Craner Curves.

Dave Smallridge and Tony Eckford played safe in the conditions. Qual and race results here, click on the PDF:

Looking at the grid, the potential for a perfect storm at Redgate loomed; the first four cars fairly evenly matched, with Simon James, Tony and Dave all rocketing through the field to catch up. Tony had liaised with midfield so we all had a plan in mind and this all worked out - at least until exiting Old Hall corner when both Simon and Chris Draycott decided to go picking flowers in the infield. Andy Yates and Tristan battled extremely closely for the lead from this point, never more than 1 second apart and usually closer, until Dave inevitably shot past.

Simon soon caught back up, and finally got past Sunbeam Challenge newcomer Steve Pickering on lap 13 and was on the tail of the battle for 2nd. At least one of the stands was on its feet throughout, sadly for Andy it ended early with a spin at Redgate leaving Tristan a delighted 2nd.

Further down the field, we lost the Alpines of Martin Brewer and Glenn Brackenridge to mechanical problems, but Bryn Griffiths and Steve Chapman were resolutely glued to the back of my Tiger, not a moment's peace for 11 laps as they caught me at the corners, frequently alongside, before I could outdrag them - at least until my 13 year old fuel pump finally cried enough, but still gave me partial pressure to finish the race.

Keith Hampson's LM Alpine brought up the rear, after sterling work to solve electrical issues in the earlier rain and some fine negotiation with the Clerk of the Course.

Tristan's earlier outing in the Intermarque brought a class win but a dented corner from an errant Ferrari.

Thanks to Jim and Marie for sponsoring this fantastic race yet again. Pictures follow; & please post yours if you have any!

Uploaded the footage from the Gopro. Link as below:-

I'm a little on my own for most of this, but entertainment provided on the first lap from Simon. However on the last lap I did a near identical spin, so it must be those damned leaky Bentlys dripping oil everywhere. (Well thats my excuse).

Thanks gain to everyone who organised, sponsored and participated. Really enjoyed the event.

Thanks Chris for posting up the video, aren't those GoPro camera's very versatile! Loved the footage and rare for Simon to spin early on, must have been the cold tyres :D

Great field of fast Sunbeam's - must be fab racing Tiger's

On a separate note, I hear that Dave wasn't allowed to race his super fast modified Tiger against the Aston Martins - pure show, very ungentlemanly behaviour there!!

Perhaps next year we will have Jackie Cochrane back also :D

Wow Steve, that was a spin and a half at the end when you were chasing down Andy.

Simon's car certainly pulls away on the straights, but looks twitchy on the bends - superb footage, thanks

Sorry for only just getting round to thanking Jim and Marie for funding the race, Tristan for organising it, everyone who took part and everyone who came to support us. Great photos and video - thank you all.
As you may be aware William was racing at Brands Hatch the following day and managed to break all the spokes on the left hand rear wheel whilst powering down Paddock Hill Bend travelling at around 110 mph - the car didn't stop sliding until it is was halfway up the hill towards the hairpin with all REMAINING wheels locked - been busy sorting out new stronger billet wheels, hence the delay in making this post...!!

With regards to not being able to take part in the Aston Martin Intermarque Race it was a shame but they are obviously not keen for us to participate until the car is bought in line with the new technical rules, mainly designed to slow us Tigers down I hasten to add..!!

PS - If you race your car I would suggest you crack test your wheels regularly, once a year minimum, especially if they are cast.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at Stratford TIGER50 event. DAVE.
