Water pump pulley ??directional

Post by pitman » Sat Jul 16, 2016 9:45 am

I want to replace my water pump pulley on my '65 260ci Tiger I with a reduced diameter one as per the cooling recommendations. I couldn't find a Fairmont/Mercury Zephyr 5 3/16" but I've found this 5 1/4" one from March Performance:

Now, my current pulley is indeed 3.25" deep. But as for all pre-'70 small blocks, my pump has a right-side ('passenger side' on my LHD) lower radiator hose inlet, unlike what's required in the above.

How the heck is a pulley not symmetrical?? I figure the bolt pattern is surely symmetrical. Can't I simply use this? Or are the grooves somehow asymmetrical in such a way that the pulley can only be gripped well by the belt traveling in one direction? Or is it simply that this pulley is usually part of a package that includes the crank pulley, and does THAT have an asymmetric bolt pattern for post-'69 small blocks?

Thanks for any insight!

After no response from March Performance despite multiple requests, I finally came across these Fairmont-sized custom-milled aluminum pulleys out of Thailand commissioned by a Tiger owner:
