At the risk of being even further 'off a nice topic' Robin's mention of 'pink playboy pictures' reminded me of the lovely Jo Collins. Here is the iconic Tiger pic:

And with advance apologies to any one who might not care to see such pics on this forum here is a less familiar one of the Playmate of the Month for December 1964

There are several other rounded examples of Jo I am thinking of putting into an article for Cats Whiskers styled "The Sunbeam Tiger Glamour Girls". Would that get a thumbs up or a thumbs down from our readers, I wonder!!

Graham,

CW is the ideal place for pics showing striking lines of stunning bodywork.
Will make a change from pics of Tony's scrubbers.

Jo reminds me a great deal of France Gall.

I guess you mean the picture of Gail on the bonnet of an Alfa i think.

Anyway back to relality, cleaned up the top loader & had a peek in side, everything is perfect so no work need there.

Eventually managed to get the oil filter apart, the sheared part is 3/4" unf, so a Jic 8 adaptor should be made to fit & make it all serviceable again.

i would throw the toploader and the remote oil filter in the bin.

if you are going to use the toploader i would change the needle rollers and fit a tailshaft breather .

Gary, Please educate me on the toploader recommendations. I have a used wide ratio toploader I am going to be putting in soon.

I did a quick search on the Tech Tips section of the forum and did not find anything on the breather. What are the issues giving rise to the need for a breather? How would I go about installing one if it is something I could do?

Are the needle rollers a weak part of the trans or highly subject to wear? Also, how hard, and expensive, is it to replace the needle rollers and how does one go about it?

Thanks, Gene

in all honesty i know nothing about toploaders except from my own experience .
my toploader that was untested was fitted back to my tiger with a 260 engine as soon as i got it back it was leaking oil and loads of imput noise in neutrel with the clutch out .so i sent it back to the specialist for engine out and recon the box .got it back and ran it for 2000 miles with no oil leaks .when the box came back the gearbox man had put a tailshaft breather in.
now hears the bit where the tailshaft breather helps .i then decided to fit a 302 motorsport crate engine not masses of power but after the engine was fitted it kept blowing oil out of the breather hole on the top plate poss due to the increase in power .so because i had the tailshaft breather i filled the breather hole in the top plate with a self tapper and now all is fine .the theory is there is less movement off oil in the tail .i also spoke to another specialist who races tigers and he said good quality racing oil in the box can stop it coming out the top plate breather .
i came accross a toploader site in the states cant remember the name poss david knee toploaders and the do a plate for the top with no breather hole and they sold the tailshaft breather .
so like i say i,m no expert these are just my experience .

Looks like this subject should have it's own thread really, but my gearbox is out of the car and I would like to know of as many tips and hints as possible before I put it back in again.
I was just planning on replacing the front and rear seals and the top plate gasket.

Gary,
my box was checked over by a specailist according to the PO, still i will change the seals just to be sure.
Not sure what you mean about a vent on the the top cover as mine is solid, there is a small vent on the tail.

Brad,

The box has been modified as Gary sugested, the vent in the lid has been welded up and a tailshaft breather was fitted.

The box was fully rebuilt using a fast road kit from "Dan Williams" in the states including new needle bearings, synchros and new 1st and 3rd cogs as they were showing signs of wear. All new seals and gaskets were used throughout.

The modifications were advised by Dan Williams who only builds ford toploaders and has done so for many years. I did include some literature in the folder about the toploader boxes and how to set them up correctly.

You seem to be making excellent progress on the bodywork, keep up the good work

Regards
Ned

Thanks to all for the toploader comments. Not sure I want to tackle the job myself. I found somewhat detailed directions on how to do a rebuild at http://www.mustangmonthly.com/howto/mum ... ewall.html Other that the extra time I would spend spent on doing it first time, there is a need to press fit a bearing in the reassembly and I do not have the equipment to do that. My used wide ratio trans was supposed to have low miles after a rebuild. But I did not like the crude and metal filings on the magnetic drain plug when I pulled it. We shall see...

Thanks again, Gene
