Rolling Road Dyno Day - John Sleath, Doncaster

i dont know if anyone is interested but tomasellie and myself use a guy in doncaster john-sleath.com for tuning,i,m trying to get a group together for a dyno day, john is based in doncaster ,take a look at his website not sure how to do working links ,i,m sure tony will edit this post and put in a working link

he can do either straight power pulls (3) he said he could do about 15 cars , at £40 per car .

or a tuners day that would give you an hour on the dyno and he would change jets ect to give the best performance or or mpg whichever suits
this costs £70 per hour plus any parts used ,

Highly recommend John Sleath, it's a rare thing finding an engine builder/tuner who knows how to use a Dyno rolling road correctly.

Needless to say, he has customers all over the UK who freight their cars (including historic race cars) to his setup.

He only real speciality is American V8's which is no bad thing for us

I had mixed feelings about rolling roads when my local "tuning specialist" couldn't really do anything with my Tiger and left pretty much disappointed, the following was a printout from that meet;



I then found John Sleath who found me another 100bhp within 2 hrs on the Dyno messing with plugs/timing/power valves and jets on the Holley carb - oh he put on a decent coil and that was about it

Given both are dynodynamics dynos, so assume both the same setup and twin roller system, and despite the different graphics they both seem to say standard shootout spec (which IIRC is no HP corrections for air temps etc) i am surprised at the different resylts. While the higher one they may have tuned your dizzy, car and general adjustments.. the difference seems enromous.

Are you sure the fist reading was not RWP and the second one FWHP? I find it hard to believe the RWHP could have been that low before (car would have been running like a dog to be that down on power). However 371 at the fly would be around 300 at the wheels on a twin roller.. so with some tweaking on jets etc.. that would make sense.

The red MKII is a 347 alloy head roller motor right? What heads and what cam is it running?

Its noticable that the 1st run power tailed off at 4000 revs, whereas the 2nd run power kept rising. Looks like you were under-carbed or weak on the 1st run which was sorted on 2nd.

Indeed it was low on power, had all the right components/ancillaries - just needed somebody to connect it all together.

Actually, John Sleath commented that the last time he found an extra 100hp for a customer, they stuffed it in a hedge and "wrote" the car off on the way home from the rolling road session It's certainly lively now with the extra HP

Have no idea, it was actually a "blind" purchase off eBay. The engine came out of a TVR Griffith.

Exactly, despite having a 750cfm carb the first time, I was running with a "street" 650HP the second time - it was all down to the correct jets and powervalve settings. You cannot just install a carb out of the box - I thought you could!

That was the first run with the local guy, in all fairness he only really wanted to plug something in as he was used to Japanese Impreza and Evo's

Agree Gary, trip to John Sleath for a "Tiger" day out would be in order - must be plenty of Tiger owners needing a "tweak" So who else is up for it

Also the first dyno run they only got the car into 3rd.. i guess as you said they just wanted to roll you on.. do a few power pulls and get you a reading.

As for the carb, so often people over carb the engines, not just V8's same with people webering smaller motors too. One thing to consider while you can shrink the jets on a larger carb, if the throats are still large you have slower airflow. Often on a street engine a smaller carb (with its associated smaller chokes) running higher air speed and well suited jets proves better power and throttle response across the normal driving RPM range, and only a slight loss in ultimate HP.

As for the motor.. nice to grab a stroker off ebay!! Did you pull it down at all or just bolt it in and run it? Did you see it run before purchase? As for head ID.. should be either casting/part numbers or in the case of aftermarket alloy heads, often a logo at the front of the heads on the vertical face.

Either way.. the final results mean you certainly have some entertainment under your right foot... so that's why you wanted the quick rack and power steering.. to play catch with the rear end? I can see the progression...

Was looking at the graphs again and the second one says flywheel power.. you sure the first one was not showing RWHP? The readouts i got liek that were RWHP, which is usual setting for a shootout run. I know that would be down a little but 260RWHp would be around 320ish FWHP... what was the RWHP of the run where you pulled 371?.. if the first is RWHP i'm tipping you picked up about 40-50HP

Just tell Mrs K that what we do is "Research & Development" and we are continuing with the progress in technology that is only now available to us since Rootes stopped in the sixties

It's always interesting to see what a few little mods can do. It also gives a good indicator of how healthy your engine is. What mods have you done?

hi martin sleath has all the bits u will need ,i spent about 8k on a new engine carb ect when i gpt the car back it ran like a bag of shi-- in 2 hours he changed coil plugs and jets and i came away with a big grin on my face ,tony and myself will be looking at a few dates which we will try and get to suit everyone ,

Briefly my 260 cu. in. has a Ebelbrock 500 4 barrel carb, Comp Cams Xtreme Energy (31-324-3) cam, 1.785" inlet valves & 1.465" exhaust valves, screw in rocker studs. The heads had some work done on the ports together with the manifolds. The pistons are from JE and give a 9.7:1 compression ratio. Still has cast iron exhaust manifolds and a 'Tiger' air cleaner.
