T55 Transmission

Post by V Mad » Mon Jan 24, 2011 9:53 pm

I know of someone selling brand new T55 current Mustang boxes for £600

Although I cant find the T55 on the Tremec website, I am told thy are basically a 5-speed T56. I believe that they are made especially for Ford therefore not listed on the aftermarket section of the website.

Does anyone know if these will fit or can be made to fit a SBF Windsor ie 302, 289 etc.

T55

I fitted a 5 speed Tremec in my Tiger last year. Replaced T5 on a 302. Used same bellhousing. The good point is 40mph/1000rev 5th gear & very strong. Bad point was having to cut away some of the cross member under the ashtray. Also had to shorten centre console. Gear stick comes up just right. I will try to down load some photos. Dean has fitted 6 speed in his Tiger.

Better put a hold on that gearbox for a bit then. I am not into cutting crossmembers!

Will a standard T5 fit without cutting the car up?

I used ex-TVR T5 box which came with shorter tailsection. Meant gearlever came up centre of tunnel alongside existing hole. So just a little bit of cutting. There are however expensive kits to bring gear lever up through existing hole. Highly recommend 5 speeds for everyday driving & motorway cruising. 100mph = 2500 revs & 20+ mpg [obviously where speed limits allow!]

Are you sure that such a gearbox exists and it is not a “T5 5 speed” as on this link:

Are you sure no modifications? I thought the only kit that allwoed that was the tom hall kit from modtiger engineering in the states, but as it turns out even that requires a little tunnel bashing
