Tremec gearbox

Post by bigbob » Tue Sep 22, 2009 3:53 pm

I have a chance to buy a good 2nd hand 5 speed Tremec gearbox. But it looks larger than my T5 around the tailshaft area. Has anyone got advice on how easy to fit, especially regarding need to cut out metal under the arm rest box/ cross member. My bellhousing is suitable. Cable or hydraulic operation of clutch? Thinking of changing as supercharged 302 is generating loads of torque & I think existing T5 won't cope.

First check exactly what model it is.
There are 4 different TR-3550 gearboxes which vary in torque capacity from 350 lbs ft to 475 lbs ft.

As you probably know, the TR-3550 was replaced by the TKO 500 and TKO 600 models with 500 and 600 lbs ft capacities.

Also have a look at Curtis Fisher's article on installing a TR-3550.

i think they are all wider than a T5. i once asked tom hall about this. he has fitted the 5 and 6 speed tremecs to tigers (as well as being the source of the nicest T5 conversion kit).

if you need a more robust box, why not go back to the top loader? they'll take a right beating!

I had a Tremec TK600 fitted to my 302 Stroker(347) replacing the T5 which failed due to the Torque increase of the Stroker Motor, Dave Herning carried out the installation Give Dave a ring
