Sunbeam Tiger 1926 Land Speed Record

'Lifted' off the web last few days;
It is hoped that the four-litre Sunbeam Tiger Ladybird car in which Segrave achieved the record in 1926 will be among the historic cars taking part in the 90th anniversary celebrations at the Merseyside resort on 16 March 2016.
Built for Major Henry Segrave to attempt the World Land Speed Record, held by Malcolm Campbell in Bluebird at 150.76 mph. The flat sands of the Southport were chosen for the attempt and on the 16th of March in 1926, Segrave successfully took 'Tiger' to a record speed of 152.336 mph.
After the record run 'Tiger' was taken back to the Works where twin superchargers were fitted and it began its long racing career.
In July of 1926, Seagrave drove the car in the Spanish Grand Prix, unfortunately retiring while in 2nd place. In 1928, Kaye Don raced 'Tiger' and, over three seasons, broke twenty-four records, breaking the Brooklands' lap record on three occasions.
Sunbeam Talbot Darracq Register members have promised to bring along more than 20 historic cars for the event and negotiations are underway for the original Sunbeam Tiger Ladybird driven by Segrave in March 1926 to be featured. Talks are also underway with the National Motor Museum about the possibility of the Sunbeam Cub to be present as a static display.
The site of the original ‘mile’ used for the record run has been identified and discussions are underway with the relevant authorities to allow cars to drive on the sands
