Hi all,

I've been lucky enough to have bought a beautiful Sunbeam Tiger recently. I have wanted a tiger ever since I was a kid. My father was an AC man, but I thought they looked too showy.

One of the things I'd like to do is swap the existing 4 speed box out for a 5 speed one. Whilst I'm pretty handy at maintenance, that's beyond me and my equipment levels.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a garage/mechanic that could do this?

Which makes insurance on a tiger.. challenging. Fortunately I've rented a good private locked garage.

Ben, the previous owner, has added all manner of security features to the car too, which is a great help.

David Herning fitted a 5 speed box in my Tiger and I've been delighted with the result - definitely makes driving on motorways etc much more relaxing.
I took advantage of the overdrive 5th gear ratio to change the rear axle ratio at the same time from 2.88 to 3.31. With a standard 4 speed the 3.31 axle ratio means 4th is just 20mph/1,000 rpm making motorway cruising (at the legal limit!) at 3,500 rpm quite busy but with the 5 speed box 70mph is only 2,000 rpm in top.

5 speed is nice but the top loader launches better on a track or drag strip . 5 speed option is nice for plodding about

Welcome to the Club. I used an ex-TVR Cosworth T5 gearbox. Advantage of TVR version is that gear stick is same distance as original Tiger [but central]
A few years ago they were about £350-400.
Dave's done good work on my car. Worth a visit.

I tried to negotiate importing 2 complete T5 kits from MDL.
Emails went unanswered, promised phone calls not returned. Like trying to swim through treacle so gave up in the end.
Not sure why this was as usually dealing with US companies is a pleasure.
Perhaps you will have better luck.

One path adopted by the US chaps and me is to swap the narrow band gear set with a wide band set from a similar aged mustang. After that you fit a new 1st gear that gives the car a hole shot start. Coupling that with a 2.17 rear drive from a jeep late 70's and a LSD and you have a very drivable car with no body cuts and a overdrive in 4th.

If you research the CAT forum there is all the advise you need. And I am not in the states where mustang parts are easy I am in Aussie land.
