Stelvio climb video - Monte 50 return trip

Post by pushrod » Thu Sep 18, 2014 11:14 am

Video of the Stelvio climb from the return trip back to the UK from the Tiger 50 Monte Tour.
We left Bormio on the on the southern side of the pass at 7am, apologies for the darkness but mother nature doesn't have automatic lights like those in the tunnels! As you will see we almost had the mountain to ourselves, all the shops were closed at the summit so we carried on and stopped for breakfast at the guest house half way down the descent.

Go make a cup of tea and settle down as it's almost 30 minutes in length.

Stunning. Looks great fun. If you hadn't driven like a granny the video would only be 15 min long!

Great video Lou, really captures the demands of the Stelvio. Would like to do that myself one day.

Punishing on the car/brakes Bob so it's always sensible to pace yourself ahead of the very long drive home

Yes, Bob I'd like to have gone quicker but circumstances on the day dictated a steadier pace. Also after 18 col's on the way down to Cannes I'd seen enough of hairpin bends!

It's odd though places like the Stelvio have a special aura, you are torn between going as fast as you can or taking your time to savour the experience. Ideally you need to do the climb twice in both directions, early and fast and then later in the day more sedately to take it all in and stop to look at the stunning views.

The cars were definitely affected by the altitude with performance notably reduced and some having difficulty re-starting at the summit. The Stelvio is the second highest "pass" in Europe at 2757m, the highest pass we climbed on the way to Cannes was the Col d'Allos at 31st highest and 2250m.

Still - one more ticked off the bucket list.

Route 66 next in 2015 on a couple of Harley's with my son.

Lou. I hope your trip on the HD's with your son to the USA next year will be scouting the route of the STOC's 'Route 66' visit to the west coast in 2016
or is it to the east coast...or both!!

'Monte' was a good leg stretcher and has given a few of us an appetite!!!

Working on that one already - Death Valley in a Tiger, now that would test the cooling system eh.

Don't forget Tiger 50 doesn't finish until June 2017.

Great video Lou, forgot to charge the battery on my Go Pro! 7 am was a good time to do the Stelvio and we thoroughly enjoyed going up and down. Glad we decided to come home the long way home, it was fantastic and thanks for arranging it all, it will live in our memories forever. Lovely Strudle at the bottom.
