Book of Norman - Fair Value?

Post by Tomaselli » Wed Mar 02, 2011 9:30 pm

I know a little while ago there was some discussion over values for the Book of Norman as a copy was placed in classifieds here on the forum (which is now sold)

Discussions here: http://sunbeamtiger.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=567

But, yesterday (1st Mar) an auction closed on eBay for another copy and was somewhat surprised of the price it fetched;

Priced at over £2,000 (plus) am I actually missing something, or is it a complete lottery on the eBay. I know of a lucky "so and so" who last year bought a copy, again off eBay, for £50!!

I am just thinking aloud.. but only 2 bidders after it started to get silly.. perhaps someone has decided to play a joke on the tiger community and they have bid it up for fun to see if the auctions follwoing will use that as a new datum?

I wonder what Norman's views are on what's happened to his book.

I assume it was written to be an aid to Tiger owners but it has turned into a speculative item who's owners are probably scared to read it incase they damage or spill coffee on it and affect it's value.

Tragically, the information in the book is now of secondary importance in value to the book itself and it has been priced out of reach of 90% of people who owns the cars it is about and would be of help to.

If current prices are now the trend, the run of books is now worth nearly $3.5 Million.

From what i hear the books were slow sellers and at the original $40 they struggled to move them. I am told that much of the info has now been usurped.. but there still is has good information.

Hi Martin,

This has been a talking point for a long time. A number of people have contacted Norman, but he doesn't seem to be interested. This is by far the highest a copy has gone for and a ridiculous amount to pay at that. There is a dollar in it for Norm, so I can't understand why he doesn't allow more copies to published.

Regards, Robin.

Another one.
Also, the seller is letting us mere mortals have a sneaky peaky at a few pages.

I was just reading on C.A.T. that they have a BON that they lend out to members.
Opinions?

Martin

I don't think Norm Miller would have any objection to that providing no dosh is involved. You are welcome to borrow my copy as a 'STOC library loan'. But as it is a large scholarly tome posting it anywhere is expensively impractical, so it will need to be handed over and back.
Are you going to the National?

My copy is well used but I still prefer it kept out of the garage!!!

I saw that one while surfing Ebay the other day. The dust cover is the best that I have seen for a while. It will be interesting to see what it goes for.
