Need help ID'ing engine, Thanks

Post by Ajac » Wed Sep 30, 2009 5:42 pm

The past few night I have been trying to figure out just what my newly acquired tiger has and so far so good. That is until last night and looking at the engine number I have in my manual. After looking it up it seems that there is alot misinformation about this code. So This morning I pulled the starter to check the number which is verified. Then i noticed that the bell house has 5 bolts. The car is a late MK1a B382002624

Car ------B382002624
Engine---C4OE 6015E
5 bolt bellhousing

The question boils down to 260 or 289? The previous owner assures me it is a 289 block that has been "underbored" to 260. From what i have gathered the "underboring" never really happened. Anything to help a young kid understand this car would be wonderful.
Thank you

I have got my Tiger engine in pieces at the moment and the block has the same code C40E 6015E. As it is disassembled I can confirm that it is a 260 block by the bore size, i.e 3.8 inches.

The 289 block has a bigger bore 4.0 inches and the same stroke as the 260.

I hope this helps

Ned is right.
If you need to double check the essential casting numbers look at this web page: http://www.raceabilene.com/kelly/hotrod/engine2.html. I guess you don't have the original valve covers and Ford spec sticker on your 1A . So this should at least help confirm the block you have.

260 got it.
Thank you both for the clarification. Like I said I found a couple sources, one on this forum, saying the opposite.

From the above link --->1964,- 289 - Ford Fairlane, engine casting number- C4OE 6015E

I do have the original chrome valve covers with tag. It is just the the engine has been out and some parts have been change in the past.
