Hi I had similar probs with my rev counter, check the earth connection on the rev counter mine was better once cleaned but it still had a tendacy to bounce between shifts.
I have since given up with the original unit and fitted a smiths electronic tach which I am very pleased with. The one I have is from the Cobra range . the smiths classic range is more similar to the original apart from a white needle, I think smiths may be able to put in an orange needle if asked.

My rev counter is not working yet. The electrician didn't connect it up once we had the engine running. I can't remember if he said it would not work or not read accurately because the ignition is electronic and the tac is set up for a points ign. But it could be changed.
