BOO hoooo
It's a warm day so turned off the heater going down the motorway. Unbeknown to me the heater valve leaked so slowly dumped water. I think it got too hot and I presume cooked the coil or the condensor. I started to get a cylinder missingintermittently and then more until it sounded like only one was firing. Managed to just get off motorway. Fuel was still there and points looked good but spark very weak. I used carry them as a spare. But not this time.
Can't believe the AA didn't have a spare.
Luckily the friend with me had gold AA membership so didn't have to wait long

I know the feeling. On the recent run out to Schloss Dyck we were buzzing along the Autobahn when suddenly the engine died. After a 2 hour wait in 100°F heat with no shade we got rescued onwards to the hotel. It turned out to be a broken roll pin in the distributor drive.
Thanks again to Dave H and Big Bob for the diagnosis and getting the car going the following morning.
I now carry several spare pins in the tool box.
Lou.

First time I broke down was some time in 1999/2000 with a broken accelerator cable. Of course, I now carry a spare. At the time was suitably impressed by the RAC that he managed to fabricate another from spares in his van, thankfully it failed on a petrol forecourt so plenty of safe space to work.
Major first breakdown was in Belgium with a broken SU fuel pump in Sep 2005. Thankfully, my paranoia paid off as I had a spare pump with me
Only once so far, I had to be put on a flat bed recovery truck, due to a failed clutch master cylinder.
