The Works Tigers 1964 - 66

This book brings to life the European rallying history of the ‘Works’ Sunbeam Tigers.

It complements much previously written about the efforts of BMC with Minis, Cooper S’s big Healeys, MGA’s, Ford with Escorts, the Triumphs etc and convincingly describes why the Sunbeam Tiger must be included among these top British marques of the superlative rallying sixties.

The Sunbeam Tiger was a road car with outstanding performance for its time and once the more powerful works rally cars had been developed by summer 1964 they brought some much needed competition to the monopoly of the Austin Healey 3000’s in the big GT class.

With a foreword by Ian Hall, the book contains a detailed history of each of the International Rallies in which factory backed Tigers competed; starting with the 'Rallye Internationale San Martino Di Castrozza' in September 1964 and concluding with the 1966 'Acropolis Rally'. It encompasses the 1964 Le Mans and the 1965 Targa Florio and inludes chapters on the build of the works cars, FIA homologation details, previously unseen works cars build sheets, motoring press road impressions of the works cars, the rally cars performance figures and a large number of outstanding monochrome and colour photographs from a number of archives – and much more.

The author, Graham Rood, has been rallying for over 45 years and his interest in Tigers blossomed when he swapped a 1275 Cooper S for ADU 311B, the first works rally Tiger and one of those most used in rallying – the enormous engine torque and effortless acceleration and hill climbing making a distinct impression. He now owns FRW 668C – the 1966 Tulip Rally Tiger and the last of the works Tigers – which also remains one of the most original Tigers. His rally career brought him into contact with the builders, drivers and navigators of the works Tigers, with the works mechanics and with Des O’Dell, Robin Turvey and Andrew Cowan – all of whom became friends. From these enthusiasts came many of the documents, anecdotes and honest assessments of the Tiger that are included in the book.

The book sets out a detailed and accurate history of the Tigers rally years, to celebrate a car which is having a well deserved renaissance in Historic Rallying and winning against the best period rally cars of the 60’s.

Measuring 23 cms by 26 cms this hard cover book contains 200 pages of a high quality paper (120gsm Matt Art) which allows the best possible reproduction of pictures, etc. (weight 1.5Klg). Not to be missed.

For those interested in the rallying history of the Tiger, or who are rallying Tigers in historics today, this is the lineage of the works competition rally cars. I cannot see anything superior to this book ever being published - STOC Editor
